Day 3 of Leg 2: Katherine to Darwin

— 19 Aug 2012 —

After a hearty breakfast of banana pancakes (Keith is a Masterchef!) and spending a relaxing morning on the Katherine, the inevitable came and we had to leave Katherine for Darwin, the party city in the Top End.

The Journey

Point A: Katherine
Point B: Darwin
Distance: 316km

There was nothing special about the trip, except a short loo stop at Adelaide River. The Adelaide River Inn is home to NT’s biggest film star, Charlie. The celebrity buffalo played a role in Crocodile Dundee and the sequel. In 2000, at the age of 27 (!!!) he caught pneumonia and had to be put down. Today, the owners have him standing proud and welcoming customers, just like he did in the old days.

We said goodbye to Charlie and all the manly men at the bar, and proceeded on our way to Darwin. I was super excited when we passed the first set of traffic lights, not far from the RAAF site. I hadn’t seen a traffic light since we left Alice 3 days ago. I hadn’t seen traffic for 3 days. WE HAD REACHED CIVILISATION.

After a quick tour of the city centre (there are only 3 main streets for entertainment and shopping), we bid farewell to Keith and made our way to our hostel, the Melaleuca, to freshen up for our night out on the town. We were going to have to say goodbye to the Austrians, Brits and the Canadians, because they were not going to be joining us on the 3 days Kakadu and Litchfield trip. Instead, they were going to do it in 2 days. Hardcore.

That night, we had dinner and drinks at Monsoons just down the road. They had a 2 for 1 pizza deal going on and $10 cocktails. An entire pepperoni pizza AND mojitos. Hell yes!

Thanks for a great time all! Hope you enjoyed the rest of your journey, and your honeymoon Tom and Charlie! See you in Austria Dave and Frank!

Stay here if you’re looking for something central. Beware it’s a party hostel so you better be up for the people and the noise. Oh, and the long waits for a shower!
