Say You’re One of Them is a collection of 5 short stories based all over Africa.
All the issues are rarely discussed in the Western news, most just skimmed over in amongst the other world news, but prevalent in many African countries; child prostitution, poverty, militia, corruption, just to name a few.
The standout story for me was “An Ex-mas Feast” which tells of a young boy who watches the motions and struggles his family goes through each day. Sniffing glues, hangovers, begging, rummaging through garbage, taunting wealthy Westerners, are all part of hard day’s work. Part of the storyline tells of the young boy’s struggle between wanting to attend school and the sacrifice his older sister has to make in order for him to attend school. He hates his sister living in the next town, visiting only on certain occasions and needing to move to the big city in order to prostitute herself at a higher rate, just to pay for his schooling and her future schooling.
A very powerful book.
