[see] An Engineer’s Wet Dream: Golden Gate Bridge

One of my Top 5 things to do in San Francisco.

Do yourself a favour and get down there NOW.

Here are some fun facts about the Golden Gate that may interest you. Or not. Depends if you’re as nerdy as I am.

1. With a main span length of 1,280 m, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world for 27 years.
2. The steel was made in Pennsylvania, and came by sea through the Panama Canal (!!!).
3. The Golden Gate Bridge construction site was the 2nd to use hard hats. The first was Hoover Dam.
4. The US War Department wanted the bridge to be painted in black and yellow stripes and the Air Corps wanted it to be painted in red and white. What the fuck. Really peoples?
5. So instead… International Orange is the official colour of the Golden Gate Bridge. The tone is #C0362C. In my opinion, it was a good idea they listened to the architect.
6. The Golden Gate Bridge has a one-way toll collection, collecting tolls only southbound into San Francisco. I should have taken the Golden Gate out to Napa instead of the Bay Bridge to avoid paying tolls on both. Lesson learnt.
7. There were 11 deaths during the construction of the Golden Gate. In contrast, 28 died building the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, 16 on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and 35 on the West Gate Bridge.
8. It is No. 2 on the Top 10 list of suicide locations. IN THE WORLD.

Views of the bay. Stunning right?

Oh, and the moment I got to drive it (on to way back from our Napa day trip), I was squealing with joy and *J was recording it all. And no, you can’t pay me enough to show you the video.

Another engineering icon down. Next up, Panama Canal!
