The Exterior of Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island, otherwise known as The Rock, was once a celebrated military fort and federal prison.

After 29 years, the prison closed its’ doors due to the unsustainable restoration and maintenance costs. It is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the grounds boasts an abundance of flora and fauna, particularly seabirds, who make it their annual nesting ground (watch your steps as there’s A LOT of splattered bird poo).

This is a visual diary of the raw beauty of the abandoned prison and grounds.
