[stay] The Flying Fox Backpackers, Katoomba

Katoomba was my base for a weekend to explore as much of the Blue Mountains as I could. I ended up at The Flying Fox Backpackers because it was cheap, highly rated and had female only dorms.

The exterior doesn’t look like much (more like a shabby house), but walk in (via the back door down the side driveway) and you’ll find a colourful interior which is warm (when the fire is on), inviting and full of chatter (usually packed to the rim with young travellers).

I signed in with a creepy looking guy (he was the owner – oops!), got a low down of all the facilities for use and activities available and then was escorted to my 7-bed female dorm.

There’s an outdoor area for socialising with other travellers and encompasses the flat camping grounds to the one side.

There’s also a sweet little spot, past the tents, where you can sit, listen to the birds and look out onto the mountains. I found myself there a couple of times with a cuppa and a magazine at the end of a long hiking day.

Stay here if you’re looking for a cheap base to explore the Blue Mountains and surrounding towns (Leura is one train stop away and quite a quaint little town), or if you’re looking for more adventurous activities (climbing, mountain biking etc) which The Flying Fox also offers.

At less than $25 per bed/night (less if you stay longer) with breakfast and internet included, how can you resist this place?

Enjoy! xx
